Animated emotions in status??????

I've spotted people using animated emotions in their status's... how are they doing this and what are they typing?

The app he's linking to doesn't do it; some of my friends have them in their status's... including the thumbs up and the dancing dude... Anybody know?

I don't think it's the app m8, as I've seen people do it without it.. even so, I went to the app and they didn't have the emotions as options.

Try this application. Unfortunately some that were working a while ago don't anymore.

Urm; did you misslink? I don't think that app does emotions, it's one of those apps that shows you a list of your friends, and gets you to answer questions about them... after which it spams your friends with invites to the app... also the app is in Chinese.... and it's the app from the link I gave.

Emoticons? Not sure that's the case, have seen people use them this morning... I'm convinced that they're hidden in facebook somewhere.. as with the emoticons in chat, only for status's.

To show why I think that, here's a screenshot of a Chinese friend of mine's facebook page, Check this out... somebody commented on his status, and posted 3 thumbs up after their post...

To see how the images are there I inspected it using google chrome, the thumbs are images that are hosted on facebook's images domain. Ergo there must be hidden emotions in facebook somewhere!

Somebody must know about this other than these two people!

These two people have usernames. Use them.

I incorrectly linked to that application since that story you linked us to in your first message says it was posted using that application. Since those guys are the developers, they have added that application to their own page and posted whatever content they wanted to to their page. In that case, images.

Now to the screenshot... that looks pretty awesome! static.ak.fbdnd.net is indeed Facebook's image host. However, Facebook uses image sprites (a bunch of images put together and then displayed as background-images through CSS) for their chat emoticons, so I'm not sure if that could actually be a "hidden" smilie or just a randomly uploaded image.

Note: External Apps icons are hosted on photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net, so this doesn't come from an external app (impressive). Also, his comment doesn't say anything like "10 hours ago from [App]" unlike these emoticons apps do. More importantly, it's a comment and not a wall post!

You have gave me a lot to think about. I'll try to figure out how he managed to do it. In the meantime, asking him wouldn't be a bad idea.

Hmm fair enough point that it's unusual for facebook not to be using splicing, however after witnessing people using the following images in status's and comments somehow... so there must be a way for your average jo to do it.

I could provide more screen-shots to show people doing it, but it doesn't show anything not already shown. (n.b. all of the people who I've seen do this have been chinese! - Perhaps it's something they get over there???)

Okay, I got a reply from Michael.

He says that he was using what they call in Japan/Hong Kong emoji emotions. These are Unicode characters that represent pictures and are often sent on mobile carriers. He was using an application called "Emoji Free" for his iphone that translates these characters to images. Apparently these are respected on facebook (or at least some of them are).

I'm still working out how to type them into facebook. But you can read more about them here.

Using http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/service/imode/make/content/pictograph/extention/index.html as a reference I tried posting the chars referenced.. only to be told by facebook that it couldn't let me post these characters in a status!

Looks like a dead end from the doing it without an app end. Which is a shame .

That means it can only be done through iPhones, or with regular PC's as well? I'm not sure if there are Emoji applications for them.

I think all it means is that you can't do it via the facebook website. I have some developer keys, so I'll try writing some test applications and posting status's with these Emoji emotions. If I make any progress I'll let ppl know.

Emoji isn't an external app mind you, it's just a keyboard that types the Emoji unicode characters, which in turn are respected by facebook - on the condition that it comes from a phone (at least that much we know to work).

Nope , Emoji emotions aren't pictures - they're unicode characters that represent pictures, which facebook respect in some circumstances.

Poke, I'm pretty sure that's not it. Emoji emoticons are added through unicode characters using an external Facebook Application.

phutchinson seems to know or trying to get to know how to develop an app that does such a thing; so, please, give some time and let him make some progress with it.

The page you linked you just shows what emoticons you can use in Facebook Chat; we already have a topic for that, and each smiley here on the forum uses the same code. Moreover, those so called 'More Smilies' look like a scam or a dumb Facebook extension that might allow you to do that... even though I doubt it. I've therefore removed it.

Close again, for those emotions to work the software needs to be installed by everybody who wants to see them. Using a rejex a unique code is swapped for an image tag, not quite right.

The emoji emotions I'm talking about exist already on facebook and require no software / apps (to view). However posting them is the tricky part that I'm trying to work out. Thanks for the attempts.
