Why do hackers HACK?
Okay, we know that FBF staff especially Ruby deals with things about hacking. We all hate hackers, (well I said "we" : addressing everyone who hates'em) We thought that they were people who don't have lives to live. But today I finished reading a book about these things, hackers, internet, technology.. and security. Now I'm not going to give you a summary about the book, go search about it if you're interested, it's really cool (even though i didn't understand some of the computer terms lawlipawps XD )

So now you've read a hacker's side, what do you think? Now please don't ask me any questions LOL. I just shared you a quote from the book XD.

"The Little Brother" by Cory Doctorow
Hackers are explorers, digital pioneers. It's in a hacker's nature to question conventions and be tempted by intricate problems. Any complex system is sport for a hacker; a side effect of this is the hacker's natural affinity for problems involving security. Society is a large and complex system, and is certainly not off limits to a little hacking. As result, hackers are stereotyped as iconoclast and social misfits, people who defy social norms for the sake of defiance. When I hacked the Xbox in 2002 while at MIT, I wasn't doing it to rebel or to cause harm; I was just following a natural impluse, the same impulse that leads to fixing a broken iPod or exploring the roofs and tunnels at MIT. .... However, the motivations of a hacker are typically as simple as "I'm an engineer because I like to design things." People often ask me, "Why did you hack the Xbox security system?" And my answer is simple: First , I own things that I buy. If someone can tell me what I can and can't run on my hardware, then I don't own it. Second, because it's there. It's a system of a sufficient complexity to make good sport. It was a great diversion from the late nights working on my Ph.D. --Andrew "bunnie" Huang Xbox Hacker: Afterword (page 371-372)

Depends, some people do it to cause havoc. Others do it to prove a point, or show how many flaws are in the very thing they're hacking.

Hackers hack because...
1) They have no life
2) They REALLY have no life
3) They can't win without cheating
4) They are greedy
5) They have no life

To add a bit of controversy to this discussion
I do know of people who are actually employed , legitimately, to try to hack systems
Their objective is to see how secure ( or not) the systems are that have been built as presumably 'hacker -proof' .......
The matter reminds me of Airport Security and terrorists
Airport security has to be 100% effective all the time vigilance cannot be relaxed at any time
But the terrorist only needs one success to fulfill his desires >>>

It was actually same thing one of the reviewers said.

You small world people have really no idea what's going on.
You don't hate hackers, you hate criminals, your anti-virus is made by hackers.
If there wasn't hackers there would be less to no security online.
And stop calling hackers those who Spam on Facebook, those are SPAMMERS, and they don't use virus, you're just dumb enough to fall for the scams and you click too many things that makes it get posted to your profile. Their main objective is to make you complete an offer or a survey so they can make money.
Now go learn something.

Why do you call us and insult all of us by saying we are 'small world people'?
Do you really think we have no idea of what is going on ???
You don't hate hackers
Can you tell me I do not hate hackers?
you hate criminals,
How can you tell me or, for that matter ,anyone, just who they hate and why they hate them ?
your anti-virus is made by hackers.
And your proof for that statement is ...what ?
If there wasn't hackers there would be less to no security online.
Is that what you truly believe?
,And stop calling hackers those who Spam on Facebook
Why tell us what we can and cannot 'do' ?
,those are SPAMMERS, and they don't use virus
Your proof of this is ..what?
you're just dumb enough to fall for the scams
That basically is an insult to anyone who has posted on here
.and you click too many things that makes it get posted to your profile
And of course you know 'personally' how each and every individual who has posted on here 'manages' their Facebook account?
Their main objective is to make you complete an offer or a survey so they can make money.

Now go learn something.
Maybe that is something you, too, need to do ?

Re: Why do hackers HACK?
1. For things. Yes, breaking into a computer is great for getting information. if I wanted a DVD that someone has, I would just need to break in and steal the DVD loaded software without having to do it myself. Free DVD anyone?
2.For status. Just like bank robbery, it looks cool to be in a gang, have an identity and get recognition for a skill. That's if you're desparate for social approval.
3.For fun. Hacking is a game to prove how smart you are. The more defenses, anti-viral, anti-spyware nad firewalls you can destry the smarter you are. Also, it's gladiator games phenominon. Yeah you can get a thrill form destroying someone's computer. It's not your own.
4.For vengence. Stupid laws against piracy? Fed up about having to buy subscriptions to iTunes and Napster? Well, hack in and modify the subscription program nd them you can watch them get angry at losing money. Also, you can lynch programs for free off them while they scramble like rats trying to fix Paypal! No, I wouldn't recommend it; it's not fair.
5.For nothing. Sometimes, you hack without meaning too. Or you join a gang to see what it's like. Before you know it, you're hooked. Don't do it.
6.For guilt. Hackers sometimes break in to fix systems which users forget to repair. They also alert users to security holes in thier system. they also can repair systems from a far which other hackers have destroyed. bear in mind, that these people are a great when they show up but like batman they can be scary. unfortunately, hacking for good causes is rare. Can someone call Techno Hood for my computer again?
Hackers hack for a reason. it's mostly pyschological.

Do not do it ; this is stealing ...
Reaally ? A criminal record maybe and no chance to get a good job either with a CRB record2.For status.

Really? so what if someone broke into your computer and stole all your private information, emptied your Bank account etc...are you then laughing ?

Do not even think about it !!!!!!!

Then be a good guy and tell the person they are at risk and do not exploit their weakness

I want to disagree with you.First of all, these people are not hackers, they are crackers. The basic difference between them is than a Hacker builds, a Cracker destroys! I have a friend who's hacker and he likes making viruses but only for fan.I think that most of them really have a life(maybe a better than us), they can make miracles with their knowledge and we mustn't always tell bad things about them
About the main topic, we all now but we are not all the same.Everyone has his way to pass his time!

That is not for fun and if I were you I would disassociate myself from someone who seeks to mess with others in such a destructive way
What 'miracles' ...stealing information etc ..you call that a miracle?
Agreed but why not use the time positively and constructively instead of seeking to destroy others ?

Make a life from what? Stealing information and stuff to which they have no actual right ?.I think that most of them really have a life(maybe a better than us),
