page is lost. how can we find it? Empty page is lost. how can we find it?

Post by fsas Thu Jun 23, 2011 12:41 pm

My son had to create a facebook page with the rview of a book he has read, for school. The teacher did not recieve his mail in which he mentioned on which page it was. However, he deleted this mail and it has been too long ago and he can not find this page back. We tried an ordinary search but did not succeed. He thinks he might have created a privicy page instead of a public page (?) so that it can only be viewed by friends. He does nog use facebook and neither do I, so i can not help him. Does anybody have any idea how we can solve this and how we can find his page back?
thanks, Anjo

What Facebook page did he pasted that in? His profile? A note? A group? A Facebook "Like" page? If he can describe where he did that, it'd be great. Wink

the problem is that he does not know that. He is not familiar with facebook so it can be anywhere... he thinks it was not on his profile. He has made an acoount a long time ago but does not use it. And he told me that he thinks he made something only for the review.

thanks for replying, Anjo

How about having a look to your browser's history? The pages he visited should be there... and he may remember where exactly he pasted the review in.

well, that's part of the problem: we had a virus/worm (despite of multiple virusscanners, one even paid for) and in the process of getting rid of that the history of the browser was deleted... I tried the history, but with no success. He had a copy of the review on an usb stick but the stick has been cleared also, because of a possible infection on the sticks.

Then I'm afraid I can't help. Unless you can provide any info at all about the page (how it looked like, the URL, text, anything at all), I can't. It'd make this a guessing game...

it is a review of the dutch version of the book "ranger's apprentice" and it is called "de grijze jager", written by john Flanagan. It is the first book so I guess my son has mentioned its title, which is in dutch "De Ruïnes van Gorlan".
the name of my son is Daan Spijkers. That is all the information I have. I do not have any text (in fact, I am searching that).

Thanks for your help so far. I really appreciate it!

May I just interrupt here?

Can you please tell us how you did this?

What scans did you use? Please name all the antivirus Programs on the computer and all the cleaning programs too .
What did you 'pay for' and why?

Who helped you to clean the computer? And how did you clean the stick ?

What P2P programs are used on that computer?

Usually, I clean the pc's myself because I am capable of doing that (sometimes with help of a forum). However, this time every scanner I tried told us we were 100% clean. Mcafee (that's the paid version I mention in my post above), Adaware, spybot, mbam, kaspersky, something with an e (esec?, este? don't know anymore) and some others. But we knew there had to be a problem because our IP address was blacklisted... so I assume we have had a spamtrojan. And the registry contained three rules which were seen as a symptom of a virus/worm. And the pc was very (very) slow, also an indication of an infection. No redirects from the browser, however, but I think those were prevented by spybot. I did not succeed in cleaning the pc and because my eldest son needed it for his schoolwork, it had to be done quick so I could not wait for help from a forum. That's why we bought paid help from mcafee.
So it was not a spoof which urged us to pay (I know those and don't fall for them).

There really was an infection, later confirmed by somebody on the hijackthis-forum (I made logs before the virus/worm was removed by mcafee). Our host file was full with rubbish but spybot prevented redirects.

The infection was found by superantispyware (mcafee did not use its own scanner but the free scanner of SAS to remove this one) and we used SAS to scan de usb sticks that had been used on the infected pc's (it was a desktop AND a laptop). The usb sticks were clean, according to this scanner (which was able to find the infection on the desktop), so the usb's have not been deeply formatted but I used panda vaccinate software which adapts the autorun and we then simply deleted the files on the usb since the stick was declared safe by the scanner.

greetings, Anjo
I don't know which P2P programs are used on that pc. it is not mine.

Mcafee (that's the paid version I mention in my post above), (Antivirus Program)
Adaware, (OK)
spybot, (OK)
mbam,(OK)
kaspersky, (Antivirus Program)
something with an e (esec?, este? don't know anymore) ??Eset?(Antivirus program )

Question; you have both Mcafee and Kaspersky ...

Are they both installed on the computer ?

Was it an on line scan that was run with Eset?

Did you sign up to a specialist Computer forum and get scans read by Trained Helpers?

no, usually only mcafee vor the virusses and spybot and adaware for the malware. The others I used because we had this infection. It was indeed ESET, but none of the scanners were online. (the online kaspersky did not work at that moment).

and yes, it was a specialized forum with specialized helpers.

may I ask why you ask all these questions? i don't see the relation to the tiopic: the lost facebook page. In my opinion the virus/worm has nothing to do with it, it only complicated the search beause the browser history was cleaned and the usb stick too.

greetings, Anjo

edit: and I used both antivirus scanners and malware scanners because at that moment i did not know the nature of the problem.

Just a 'courtesy drop -in' on a thread I happened to 'review' and noted what had happened and sought to ensure that the computer in question has the appropriate Protection on it happy

and yes, it was a specialized forum with specialized helpers.

So I assume you trust their ability to clean the computer ...good !!

Does you son have a Facebook account and can he still log into it ?

Where does the Teacher pick up her emails from ?

Is it a School email address or a Private one ?

ok, thanks for your concerns, but I am quite confident I have good protection: I am quite keen on protection against virusses and malware. It wasn't my own computer and that is the reason I didn't notice it earlier. I can "sense" it when a computer behaves out of the order. But this computer is used only by my sons and they are a little bit less precautionary... Now they have seen (and hopefully learned) what can happen.

My son has a facebook account and can still login on it but does not use it. But it is not the account he put the review in. He knows that for sure.
The teacher has a school account for her mails and that address is what my son used to mail her the URl of the pacebook page with the review.

I have sent more mails to other teachers of that school and that's how I found out we were blacklisted (the spam-filter the school uses noted the blacklist we were on).

Did he send the email to the Teacher from the Computer via an email client or from an email server?

hotmail (live is it called nowadays I think).
We dont't have our own email server. We do have a "normal" account but hotmail is more suitable for my sons. And since they are not as precautios as I am, I am not willing to give them access to our provier account (which they would need for the web-based email of our provider).
It is not a budged-provider: it is known as one of the best.

If I have grasped this correctly!!

Whoever can log into that email account, please do so and see if the email in question is in the Sent box ?

You may also find one in the In box as 'returned as spam 'or similar ?

the email isn't there anymore. He deleted everything. Even the deleted item box (I had that idea but he knows that a deleted item is not reeally deleted untill you empty that folder. It is an old email acoount so recently he totally cleaned it and didn't realize that it is wizer to keep such mails as some sort of proof that it has been made and sent...

His mail was filtered as spam, but wasn't returned as such. The school offers the opportunity to recieve the spam in a designated spamfolder or the spam is deleted at once. I don't know which option this teacher has chosen. but even if she has a specialized spamfolder it has been emptied. The mail of my son isn't there anymore and is also not returned.

I think he was, but he does not know this anymore. It hase been more than a month ago... but the teacher didn't look at it before.
He said to me that he made it straight into Facebook, whatever that means. He saved a copy on an usb stick, but that was emptied as I explained above.

greetings, Anjo

edi: we don't need the page for school anymore... it is too late now: the report meetings have been finished yesterday. So if retrieving the page is a lot of work for you, then just let it go.
Now it is merely our curiosity for what has happened, the page is not necesserry anymore for school. He did not get a bad grade for "not entering", since he did make it but it is lost somehow.

I had thought about using System Restore to try to go back to when it happened but that would be to go back to the infection!!!

I think you may need to do a good search on Google etc to see if the page can be found somehow , now just out of pure curiosity

What was the title of the Project?

And a huge lesson to be learnt from this

Save your emails ; Back up work

Check computer for infections and keep it clean

Do not ( if you do ) use any P2P stuff as it is likely to guarantee you a 'computer screw-up'!!!

Do you wish us to keep this thread open or...???
