To hide activity from your friends, go to your homepage, click on "Top News", scroll down, click on "Edit Options" and block the Applications you want. If that doesn't work, find any post of that kind from your friends and click the "Hide" button when you hover the right top corner of this post with your mouse. Then click "Hide ----"

To block requests, go to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], find the request, and click on "Ignore all invites from this friend".
