I am having an issue with verifying my account Empty I am having an issue with verifying my account

Post by theprojectj Sat Sep 11, 2010 5:24 am

About 3 weeks ago I successfully opened a facebook account with the same email address that I'm using for this post (I'd rather not post it here). I was able to log in for all of about 20 minutes before I was forced logged out upon receiving my first message from a user. When I attempted to log back in, I was met with what I have found to be the standard:

"Confirm Your Identity

To continue, we need you to provide your phone number. This quick security check helps keep Facebook a community of real people who connect and share using their real identities.
Confirm your identity by adding a mobile number to your account

Add your phone

Please click the button below to continue.
(Or use a different verification method)"

Well I don't have a cell phone with text messaging capabilities. So, I selected "(Or use a different verification method)" which sent me back to the same page, repeatedly, no matter how many different times or ways I clicked on it.

So, I attempted to contact Facebook with this problem figuring that there must be an easy solution. Even though I know I am the person who is attempting to log in, and not someone impersonating me, Facebook does not. I mean, that is the reason why this roadblock exists, right? To verify that I am Jason D*****? Which is a great feature to have, to ensure the safety of Facebook users. It's comforting that Facebook appears to take our privacy seriously, especially in this age of Identity Theft. To get back to what I was writing, it took some time, but I found a way to contact Facebook via the @support.facebook.com address. According to the instructions, I needed to simply attach a picture of the problem in the email with a description of the problem (as was requested). No reply. I have since written 2 additional times and I have not received one word about my problems with account verification. Not even an automatically generated email acknowledging, "Facebook has received your email about your problem" or, "Facebook is looking into this issue" or, "Facebook has a limited staff so some responses will take longer" or, any sort of response... No reply to date.

I'm not sure if you just don't have the staff to deal with this problem, or if there is some sort of glitch in the system, or I'm not sure what. In my frustration, I searched on google/yahoo/etc for a possible solution to this problem and I have to tell you there is a number of ugly things written about Facebook out there. What I perceived as securing our information and right to privacy, many others have used words such as data-mining and discrimination. I certainly hope that these individuals are just confusing the efforts of this company to maintain my privacy with some sort of slanted ulterior motive. I can completely appreciate that this company wants to make sure that I am Jason D*****. In the brief period that I was logged into Facebook I saw a number of family members and old friends that were on my, not sure how you put it, people I would know 'thingy'. Heck, my mom keeps calling me and asking me when I'm going to get my Facebook up and running because she sent me a friend request. I believe you're just doing the best you can to make sure that Facebook is a positive experience for everyone, and I look forward to using Facebook just as soon as we can clear this little misunderstanding up.

Thank you very much for your time.

Well I'm in the middle of the 7 step program provided by Betty, and I hope in a couple hours when I log in that I will be able to use a land line. Hopefully this will be resolved by this afternoon. Thank you for your tips.

-Jason D*****

P.S. Since the land line number at my home isn't in my name, how does this assure that I am who I say I am?

I am having an issue with verifying my account Empty Re: I am having an issue with verifying my account

Post by theprojectj Sun Sep 12, 2010 10:14 pm

Well, I've been very patient about this, and I can't for the life of me find any reason why my new account has been disabled. I've read the ToS (https://www.facebook.com/terms.php) and I'm not in violation of any of your rules. I'm not impersonating Jason D*****. The only person I've contacted thru facebook, I actually had to contact his sister first because his privacy settings wouldn't allow me to contact him for some odd reason, and I've been in contact with this person outside of facebook via the telephone and email. I really do not understand why I am being treated this way, especially when all I wanted to do was to keep in touch with my family and maybe contact some old friends that I've lost touch with. I hate to say this but I really do feel like I'm being discriminated against just because I do not own a cell phone. And really, as far as that goes, I'm sorry, but no where in the ToS does Facebook mention that I have to own a cell phone to use facebook. In fact, the only mention of phones in general is Section 6 parts 1-3. (see [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

So, if Facebook's ToS doesn't mention ANYTHING about a cell phone requirement, then why am I required to have one to activate my account which was arbitrarily deactivated by Facebook. I write 'arbitrarily' because if the person I contacted didn't report me for harassment, and I'm not a sex offender or something like that, then why was my account deactivated?

What it comes down to is this: it seems very unfair that Facebook requires individuals to produce a cell phone number in order to use Facebook, even if we do not own one. And if that really is the policy of Facebook, then why isn't that covered in your ToS? I mean I can understand if I logged in and maybe someone lodged a complaint against me, or I put up pornographic material, or some other violation. But, I've been locked out since the 24th of August. It is now the 12th of September. It's not as though Facebook has given me a host of information and I'm just too ignorant to understand how to follow directions. It's not like I was pointed to the 'So you don't have a Cell Phone but need to verify your account' page. So, I am asking again, can someone please actually help me in regards to this issue.

Thank you for your time.

I am having an issue with verifying my account Empty Re: I am having an issue with verifying my account

Post by theprojectj Wed Sep 15, 2010 4:38 am

I have already tried that

EDIT: Am I locked out of Facebook because the name on my email account is Nonaya Business instead of Jason D*****??? Is that the reason I've been locked out of Facebook? I guess one might wonder why I would make a fake name for a free email service, so I'll answer that question. There are a number of websites (Pipl, Spokeo, intelius, etc), who have gotten their information by data-mining, which show people's names, family members, known addresses, phone numbers, income, etc etc all at a click of a button. I have been very active in protecting my personal information over the years. The only time to date that I've used my real name on the internet was when I opened an account with Facebook.

So, I will ask this question then, is having an email associated with a Facebook account with a different name a violation of Facebook's ToS and is that why I am locked out of Facebook? If so, I'll open a new email account with my name and we can associate my Facebook account with that email and that should resolve the issue.

I have to be honest here, I am really insulted that I haven't gotten this situation remedied yet. First of all, I was locked out after only 20 minutes of use. The only person I was able to contact during that time was an old friend from years ago through his sister (due to his privacy settings). When I was logged out by Facebook I received no explanation, no email, nothing. I have searched the 'customer support' links; have searched via search engines; contacted Facebook too many times to count; and so forth. Now, it's been 22 days without this problem being solved. The way I see it, I'm going to have to go buy a cell phone just to use your service. I still have yet to find any posted information that Facebook requires me to purchase a cell phone in order to use their service, but here we are. Buy a cell phone with text messaging capabilities or don't use Facebook.

Another really annoying part of this is that the reason I'm locked out is for my security, right? Let's add this up. I've read a number of posts and searched through Facebook's support pages and all I've discovered is that Facebook needs the cell phone so that I can text the letter 'f' to 32665 (FBOOK) or something similar. How does that ensure that I'm Jason D*****? If all you need is a cell phone with text messaging capabilities, then anyone with my birth-date and full name could open an account and impersonate me. I have yet to see how your company is going to ensure that I am who I say I am by getting a cell phone. This doesn't make any sense.

So, let's start over, from the beginning. I think we've gotten sidetracked with the whole cell-phone-this and change-my-password-that. Here's a very simple question:

WHY WAS I LOCKED OUT FROM MY ACCOUNT?

Maybe if we get that answered, we'll know exactly what we're looking at. Just let me know why I was locked out so that as I search for a solution, I know what I'm trying to solve. Thank you for your time.

At the risk of....

May I ask if you have tried to use a different browser for this

and I assume you have logged out of the computer ( which only you use and own ) and completley switched it off and tried again after to access Facebook ?

As to the e Mail address, I cannot see what problems there can be with you choosing what you want to use for Facebook .........

Hi Jason,
While I understand your frustration, please keep in mind that we are not associated with Facebook.com in any way. As a result, we are unable to actually see your account to see exactly why Facebook decided to disable it.

Do you think that on this site you are in communication with Facebook staff?

Yes, that was my original post. And, yes, I think that if these are Facebook's support forums which Facebook made a link to them and they share a common name (Facebook), then yes it would follow that this would be a place I would go to get this situation remedied. That's what I'm looking for. A solution. And, I've been looking for the last 23 days. It seems to me that since our wild stabs have accomplished nothing, I figured we could look for a cause-effect sort of answer. So, I'm asking just a very simple question on a Facebook Forum about my Facebook account. And that question simply is:

"Why was my account deactivated?"

Thank you very much for your continued assistance.

As noted in my earlier post, we are not affiliated with Facebook.com in any way. There are no links on Facebook.com which endorses this site as a means for an official support forum, if at all. In addition there are various threads & the forum's splash page which states that we are not Facebook's official support forums. This is merely a community forum, where fellow user help other users.

With that said, back to your problem; what email provider is your email address (eg. hotmail, gmail, etc)?

The only thing I can think of that MIGHT be triggering Facebook's system is the fact that you have the word 'business' in your email address; maybe that is why facebook needs to verify you (not a likely possibility, but the only thing I can think of so far).

I think it would probably be easier if you just created a new account with another secondary email address, if you are sure that you didn't violate any TOS during the brief stint on the account in question.

I know I didn't. Alas, I'm probably going to do what I really don't want to do and capitulate to the cell phone demand.

EDIT: I'm in with a cell phone. (And not happy about it)
