When you see "chat on line" how can you tell which of your friends are on line?

This sounds like a question to do with MSN or do you mean chat on line on Facebook itself?

Ruby, I think the OP means that on Facebook Chat, even though you click on a friend whose name appears as "Online", you can't chat with him/her since you get the message "(Friend) is offline. You can try to send him a message".

@dhovey: On Facebook Chat, those who have a green dot next to their names (like this • Your friend) are the ones online. If you get that error I mentioned above, try switching to a better browser like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. If it doesn't work, it may be because your internet connection is too slow to run FB chat properly.
